Health & Ethics

Poodles by Diana is a small, home-based Standard Poodle program in Belgrade, Montana. Our dogs live with us as family. We plan rare litters, not a constant supply, and we would rather have an empty availability page than place a puppy we are not proud of.

We breed pet-quality Standard Poodles for families — intelligent, people-oriented companions — not volume, fads, or designer mixes.

What responsible means here

  • We breed only Standard Poodles. We do not breed toys, minis, or doodle crosses.
  • Adults live in the house and yard, not stacked in runs.
  • Dams are not treated as production animals. We limit how often a female is bred and retire her when her body or temperament says it is time.
  • Puppies stay with the litter and their dam until they are ready to go home — not before 12 weeks, and later if a pup needs more time.
  • If we do not have the right puppy for you, we will say so.

Health testing of our breeding dogs

Before a dog is used in our program, our sire and dams complete a full genetic DNA panel through Embark.

We are happy to share reports with serious applicants. No breeder can promise a dog will never get sick. What we can promise is that we do not skip the tests that catch known, avoidable genetic problems in Standard Poodles.

How puppies are raised

Puppies are born and raised in our home in Belgrade. They are handled daily, exposed to household sounds, and introduced to people of different ages when it is safe.

Each puppy goes home with:

  • Age-appropriate vaccinations and deworming, with written records
  • A recent veterinary exam
  • A bag of the food they are eating
  • A written contract and health guarantee

Our puppies are not microchipped by us. Chipping is left up to the adopting family if they choose to do it.

Our sire is AKC registered, but our dams are not, so puppies from our litters are not AKC registerable.

We do not ship a puppy like a parcel to the highest bidder. Pickup is arranged with us in Belgrade, Montana. We are willing to meet within about a 6-hour drive, with a fee assessed by distance. We do not crate and ship dogs across the country.

Health guarantee and contract

Every puppy leaves with a written contract. Our health guarantee covers the puppy for up to 18 months. In plain language it covers:

  • Take-back: if you cannot keep the dog at any point in its life, you return it to us. We do not want our dogs in rescue or on a classified ad.

We send the contract before a deposit is due so you can read it without pressure.

Puppy mills and high-volume breeding

We do not support puppy mills, brokers, or pet-store pipelines. We will not sell to a third party who intends to resell.

Watch for these signs anywhere, including here if we ever slip: always-available litters of many breeds; no named parents; no health paperwork; no contract; puppies released well before 12 weeks; pressure to wire money the same day.

What we ask of families

A Standard Poodle is a large, smart, coat-intensive dog. We place puppies in homes that can provide daily exercise and training, professional or committed home grooming, routine veterinary care, and a plan for the dog’s whole life.

If that does not fit yet, we would rather wait with you than send a puppy into a mismatch.

Questions we welcome

Ask about test results, the contract, how the dam is cared for during pregnancy, or why we chose a pairing.
